Contemporary fall decor

It's the start of my favorite time of the year! The kick off to the festive season starts with a cozy, autumn home. Now there is nothing wrong with burlap, but at times it can feel limiting during the fall season when so many of the fall decor pieces are more farmhouse than modern. The trick is to decorate with clean lines, metallic pieces, dried florals, and cozy textiles.

My favorite place to start is in the kitchen! Decor is always best in threes in a variety of heights. The white vase has a slight rustic charm to it while still maintaining clean lines and a neutral palette. While I found mine at a vintage fair, here are some links to similar designs:

The brass bunny urn is a new piece and I'm obsessed. It's a piece that can be used year round and doubles as storage for coasters, candy, or any other small storage needs. Layer it with other pieces or use it as a stand online when shelf styling.

The candle is homemade and the jar is from the glass craft section at Hobby Lobby. Candle making is such a fun past time and you can create your own custom pieces without the high price tag. If you find a candle is a pretty bowl or other ceramic piece, you don't have to get rid of it once the candle is gone! Replace it with your own scented candle and reuse it again!

The key to the kitchen is intentional pieces without cluttering. Add in some warmth with a wooden cutting board and layer your utensil holder, highly used but decorative kitchen tools, and of course a glitter pumpkin!

And I couldn't pass up the minimalist decorative plate from Hobby Lobby.

Find a neutral bowl and layer different colored pumpkins and metallic leaves. I use this piece as another kitchen accent but it can be used on coffee tables, dining tables, powder rooms, or entryways. Grab a remade mix of pumpkins from Hobby Lobby or get crafty by buying bulk pumpkins online and decorating them in your choice of colors. Spray paint some leaves to save some additional $$.

Traditionally dining tables have one large centerpiece but I love the more modern approach of creating a collection of smaller items. Candlestick holders of various heights are a favorite go to for each season. As noted before, decor in groups of threes is always a good look and I did this on the small scale with the candlestick holders and overall with the design.

Another neutral bowl with pumpkins in different colors and textures, pine cones, and acorns add some color to the space while the boxwood ball and natural wood bowl add the freshness of faux greenery.

1. Natural wood bowl: Originally from the Studio McGee line at target, the are now sold out. Click here for a set of two duplicates from Pottery Barn or buy them 3rd party from eBay or Poshmark.

2. Velvet Pumpkins: A mix of white and grey plus pine cones from Hobby Lobby

3. White pumpkins: Mix of sizes from Hobby Lobby

4. Glitter wood oversize acorns: pack of 4 from Hobby Lobby

5. 3 piece set of candlestick holders from Target

6. Faux boxwood ball: 11" ball from Ballard Designs

Another dining table options is to layers pumpkins of multiple sizes & colors, small and large pine cones, votive holders and metallic leaves across the length of the table. I love the carefully cultivated look of disarray! Be sure to mix pumpkins of different sizes, colors, and textures to get a full look.

Don't forget to decorate your powder room! Again in the group of three, I included dried florals, glass pumpkin and a coordinating candle. The look is minimalist and it doesn't take much to create a cohesive look throughout the home.

No fall look is complete without a welcoming front porch. Layer pumpkins and gourds of different colors and sizes with multiple colors of mums. Grab some affordable terracotta planters from Lowes and you're all set. My black lanterns work year round as do the faux boxwood planters. While currently out of stock, the boxwood planters are from At Home Superstore and they usually have a fun variety in the spring and summer to choose from.

Another fun way to add a Halloween vibe is 3D vinyl bats! Such a fun trend that started in 2020 and I hope to see more in 2021!

A frustrating part of a contemporary fireplace is that you don't have a hearth to put decor items. So when these fun bats made their appearance, I created the illusion of them flying out of the gas grate and around the fall wreath! It was also a fun way to incorporate the wreath that was too small on its own to fill the fireplace.

Each year is a fun opportunity to add to your fall decor and reimagine ways to reuse the ones you currently have!
